NewsBITC Challenge 07/04/11
Roddensvale School is situated in the residential area of The Roddens, Larne. It provides education for 83 pupils with severe learning difficulties between the ages of 2 - 19 years.
On 7th April 2011 a challenge was laid down to create a gardening facility where pupils with special needs could develop transferable skills and knowledge which could be utilised in future employment opportunities. This included building, a seated area, raised flower beds, chicken run, recycling area, painting and moving over 12 tonnes of soil and stones.
A team of 15 members from Triangle, Michelin and Ledcom set about trying to make Roddensvale's wishes a reality. The team, led by Mervyn Garrett, Triangle's Corporate Services Manager was assisted by John Shannon from the Inver Garden Centre who acted as a technical advisor on the day. Materials for the challenge were provided by Business in the Community Members, Haldane and Fisher, The Patton Group, Ledcom, Inver Garden Centre and Triangle
While it was a day of hard work in the blazing sun, such was the commitment of the team that they stayed late to finish off the work. An enjoyable day was had by all involved and the school's staff and pupils were an inspiration and very willing to get their sleeves rolled up and help on the day! |
